About Dhanaulti
Just beyond the crowds of Mussoorie, the road climbs through thickening forest to Dhanaulti, a tranquil stretch of deodar and oak woodland at around 2,286 metres that offers everything its famous neighbour does — cool air, mountain views, winter snow — but with a fraction of the bustle. For travellers seeking a calmer Garhwal hill experience, it has become a much-loved alternative.
The town's centrepieces are its twin eco-parks, Amber and Dhara, terraced gardens of towering conifers laced with walking paths, swings and viewpoints, developed to protect the forest while welcoming visitors. The thin alpine air, the scent of pine resin and the long silences make it an easy place to slow down.
Nearby rises the revered hilltop shrine of Surkanda Devi, reached by a short trek or a ropeway, with commanding 360-degree Himalayan views from the summit. Combined with the adjacent attractions of Kanatal and the great blue expanse of Tehri Lake, Dhanaulti anchors a quieter, greener corner of Garhwal that rewards an unhurried day or two.
