Overview
The Chopta-Tungnath trek is one of the most rewarding short treks in Uttarakhand, taking you to Tungnath — the world's highest Shiva temple at 3,680 metres. Often called the "Mini Switzerland of India", Chopta is a small region of lush meadows surrounded by forests of rhododendron, deodar, and pine at the edge of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
The 3.5 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath is moderately easy, winding through ancient forests that burst into spectacular red and pink during the rhododendron bloom season (April-May). At the top, the 1,000-year-old Tungnath temple offers not just spiritual solace but panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba and Bandarpoonch peaks.
For those with extra energy, a 1.5 km climb beyond Tungnath leads to Chandrashila summit at 4,000 metres — where a breathtaking 360-degree Himalayan panorama awaits, making this one of the best sunrise points in all of Uttarakhand.
